Dollar Softens as Canadian Inflation Surprises and Long Yields Climb

A defensive US dollar, a hotter-than-forecast Canadian CPI print and 30-year Treasury yields at levels last seen in 2007 frame a session of cross-currents rather than a single trend.

Canada's Inflation Surprise Divides the Loonie

Canada's July consumer price index rose 3.0% year on year, above the 2.9% consensus 1819, with the monthly reading in line with forecasts at 0.5% 21. The Bank of Canada's core measures also firmed, with the year-on-year core gauge rising to 2.3% from 2.1% and the monthly core figure climbing to 0.2% from 0.1% 2223. FXStreet attributed the acceleration in part to a rebound in gasoline prices 12.

The currency's response was not uniform. One headline reported the Canadian dollar firming after the hotter print 2, while another, filed minutes earlier, described the currency struggling against the euro even as inflation accelerated 3. FXStreet separately framed the data as a test of the Bank of Canada's policy outlook 38. USDCAD was reported testing its 200-day moving average and a channel trendline, with buyers said to be attempting to stall the pair's decline 7. SentryQ's own measurement shows USDCAD closing at 0.70835, up 0.34% on the day, with 21-day realised volatility at 6.4% annualised 47.

Capital-flow data released alongside the inflation figures showed foreign portfolio investment into Canadian securities at $40.83B in June, well above the $15B expected 15, while Canadian portfolio investment in foreign securities rose to $35.43B from $22.27B 14. Separately, Unifor said Stellantis is weighing closure of its Brampton plant 28, a data point on the Canadian industrial backdrop that sits apart from, but alongside, the currency story.

A Dollar on the Defensive, Yields Climbing at the Long End

The US dollar began the week on the defensive, according to InvestingLive's session preview 27 and a European markets wrap describing the dollar holding lower 36. Gold held near $4,400, with FXStreet linking the level to fading Federal Reserve rate hike bets weighing on the currency 37. A Reuters poll of economists cited by FXStreet and Investing.com found consensus expectation for the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged for the remainder of the year 3339.

This sat against firmer domestic data: the Empire State manufacturing index printed at 20.6 against an 11.0 estimate 1620, and TD Securities characterised the broader backdrop as one of sideways growth and sticky inflation 13. At the same time, US 30-year Treasury yields rose to their highest level since 2007 9, a long-end move that stands in some tension with a dollar reported as soft and rate-hike expectations reported as fading.

Elsewhere in currencies, the New Zealand dollar reached a two-month high, with FXStreet attributing the move to dollar weakness offsetting softer Chinese data 10, and sterling was described as pressing toward 1.3600 amid what FXStreet called a strengthening uptrend 24. SentryQ's measurements show EURUSD closing at 1.15692 (+0.35% on the day, 4.1% annualised realised volatility) 42, GBPUSD at 1.35362 (+0.37%, 4.9% volatility) 43, and USDJPY at 1.354 (+0.37%, 4.8% volatility) 44.

Equities: Records and Retreats Side by Side

The S&P 500 reached an all-time high even as Wall Street futures slipped to start the week, per Yahoo Finance 35. Within the session, the Dow was reported falling while the Nasdaq rose, with memory-chip names Micron and Sandisk extending gains 29; Investing.com separately noted Nasdaq futures gaining on tech-stock strength 40. Among single names, HF Sinclair Corp stock reached an all-time high of $94.24 6, while Cornerstone Strategic Value Fund and RBA stock each touched 52-week lows, at $6.92 and $83.55 respectively 54.

Measurement Snapshot

Beyond the headline flow, SentryQ's daily closes show AUDUSD at 1.35362 (+0.37%, 4.9% annualised realised volatility) 45 and USDCHF at 159.326 (-0.14%, 10.8% volatility) 46, the latter figure notably wider than the other pairs measured, consistent with a session in which currency moves were not confined to a single narrative. No completed economic releases fell within the measurement window beyond those already reported 41.
